The head of Abkhazia’s Government-in-Exile Resigns. The head Ruslan Abashidze gave his resignation from his position today, September 4, 2024.
It is worth noting that the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia did not provide any reason for decision of head. The head of the Government-in-exile, Ruslan Abashidze who has been in office since 2019 suddenly decided to resign. Everyone was shocked to learn that his decision was taken without providing any solid reason.
As the head is not in power electing a new head will begin shortly. The Supreme Counsel for the Abkhazia region will make the decision. The council will decide the new head’s name after getting consent from the President of the Republic of Georgia.
Generally the government-in-exile has been working in its present form since the conflict in the 1990s. However for the time being the supreme counsel is entitled for the appointment of a new acting head for the region for a limted period as well.
After their resignation the head Abashidze stated “I am very thankful to all the members of the Abkhazian Government. I am happy that they have helped me to make many important decisions.
At the same time he expressed his gratitude to the Supreme Council for its exceptional support during his tenure as head of government in exile. He also thanked the officials and representatives of the executive and legislative branches of the Georgian Government for extending unconditional support as well as all citizens of the Abkhazia area.
In addition Abashidze said, I strongly believe that the stable and strong peace policy, the goal of our government will be realized soon. The main objectives of our government, such as the de-occupation of the country, peaceful development and ensuring stability will be accomplished with the support of the international community as well.
At the end of his message after his resignation Abashidze said ,I am thankful to the diplomatic corps that has been accredited in Georgia. I cannot ignore the support of many countries and international organizations for the population displaced from Abkhazia.
