Georgia: Meeting held of Parliament affairs committee

An external meeting of the Parliament's Agrarian Affairs Committee was held in Mtskheta to discuss agriculture diversity and measures to increase in agri-production.

An external meeting of the Parliament’s Agrarian Affairs Committee was held in Mtskheta. During the meeting many issues were discussed including agriculture diversity and measures to increase in agri-production.

At the same time at the session the Agrarian Affairs Committee heard the report of the Rural Development Agency of the country. Similarly David Tsitlidze the director of the rural development agency spoke about the activities and planned events in 2024.

According to David Tsitlidze the agency is implementing programs/projects initiated by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture aimed at helping farmers and strengthening their capabilities.

As per the speakers of the meeting the strong agriculture sector is very important for the food security of country. They also said that the farming sector is facing many problems due to climate change and global warming. The rural development agency is also working to enhance the agriculture sector’s productivity.

The meeting also discussed the purpose of implementing institutional reform of agriculture and rural development policy management with EU funding and support from UNDP. An internal agency working group was created a few years ago for this purpose also.

As a result institutional reform has begun with aims to implement European management standards in the process of implementing agriculture and rural development policies and transforming the agency into a European-type agriculture agency.

Today the agency is working in two main areas implementing projects and programs to empower farmers and an extension service to consult farmers. The agency implements more than two dozen programs and projects with state co-financing. Moreover, the committee has accepted the presented report.

The chairman of the meeting committee Gela Samkharauli, members of the committee, Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Tengiz Nasaridze and representatives of the ministry agencies, State Commissioner for Mtskheta-Mtianeti David Nozadze, Mayor of Mtskheti Municipality Dimitri Zurabishvili and mayors and chairmens of municipalities, Director of Rural Development Agency Davit Tsitlidze and other representatives of agency were present during the meeting also.
