Dy. Agriculture Minister attends 34th Session of FAO regional conference

Rome: Nino Tandilashvili, the Deputy Agriculture Minister of Georgia  attended the 34th session of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisations) in Rome  Italy . The meeting’s objective was to discuss the role of innovative technology and digitalization in sustained agriculture practice in countries of Europe and Central Asia.

The meeting is a unique platform for 53 members of the ERC (Regional Conference of Europe) to discuss different ways and best practices for responding to the threats posed by climate change and global warming.   The FAO director general, QU Dongyu, termed the four-day conference very successful. Speaking on the meeting’s outcome the director general stated “Conference helps us to identify the priorities which  are needed for the guidance of organizations.”

The FAO director general also expressed his gratitude to Moldova’s deputy prime minister and agriculture minister for their guidance as the chair of the regional ministerial conference this year.  The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture shared information regarding Minister Nino Tandilashvili’s participation. The ministry also stated that at the summit, Georgia produced Georgian wine as the priority product at the FAO headquarters.

The discussion of the FAO regional forum also addressed the issues of water scarcity, regional and global food security and the transformation of agriculture and food systems.  The other significant issue that drew the attention of participants included the challenges faced by landlocked countries. These countries have no direct access to the sea  so they have to bear the heavy cost of transportation.

Sea transportation is one of the most cost-effective methods of transnational imports and exports of goods. However, the highest transposition cost can further hinder agriculture development and food security.   The Georgian minister, on the other hand, also shared the methods and other steps being taken to overcome the challenges of the agriculture sector and ensure food security for all.   The minister also said that Georgia always supports collective efforts at the regional level to progress and sustainable development.
