The Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, Carl Hartzel said that the implementation of EU recommendations will be a strong message that Georgia is back on the right track.
According to the ambassador, everyone should understand that this is a historical moment for the country and specific actions are needed.
“Everyone should think about how to use the important opportunities available to the country. The road to Europe remains a merit-based process. The ball is now in Georgia’s court. Georgia, as well as Ukraine and Moldova, must take concrete actions to demonstrate their willingness and ability to move forward – toward EU membership. No time to waste.” It is not, because the eyes and ears of Europe are currently focused on this region.
The challenge for Georgia is to fulfill these 12 priorities as soon as possible. Once this happens, the country will send a very strong message to the EU and its countries that Georgia is back on track and can be relied upon to move forward. There is no time for complacency because we must not miss this moment. Action is needed now,” says Hartsel.
The European Council granted candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, but not to Georgia. The Council recognized the European perspective of Georgia and declared that it is ready to grant the candidate status as soon as the set priorities are fulfilled.
The commission recommends that Georgia be granted candidate status after various priority issues are resolved.Â
Deoligarchization, institutional strengthening, accountability, justice reform, media independence – these are part of the main recommendations that Georgia should implement.Â
