Bolnisi: A court in Bolnisi sentenced one person to one year and two months in jail. He was found guilty of animal cruelty. The court accepted the evidence presented by the Georgian prosecution office.
While pronouncing its decision the district court of Bolnisi also shared the evidence presented by the prosecution office. The court based its decision on the evidence related to animal cruelty.
After receiving the information a proper investigation was conducted by the law enforcement agencies. The investigation of the law enforcement agencies has confirmed that on December 6, 2023, the accused severely beat a dog with a stick in the village of Kachagan Marneuli Municipality.
Later on law enforcement officers arrested the accused on January 9, 2024 for committing this heinous crime. The accused have also shared the video material depicting the said fact on social networks. He was charged under the third part of Article 259 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (cruel treatment of an animal, which caused its death) and was imprisoned as a preventive measure. Article 259 is one of the strict sections of Georgian law.
The trial was initiated against the accused for the crime committed. The district court of Bolnisi found the accused guilty under the first part of Article 259 of the Criminal Code of Georgia (cruel treatment of an animal that caused its mutilation) and sentenced him to 1 year and 2 months of imprisonment. This has been awarded as an exemplary punishment.
It is worth noting that the Georgia prosecutor’s Office has a strict criminal law policy on animal cruelty crimes. On the prosecutor’s initiative a draft of legislative amendments was introduced in Article 259 of the Criminal Code was prepared to prevent such incidents. This draft amendement were issued for tightening the punishment for the crimes of animal torture and cruel treatment across the country to curb the incidents.Â
