Tbilisi, Georgia: The Vake-Saburtalo main office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on Wednesday that they have arrested and sentenced to death a robbery suspect, identified only as G. G., who was born in 1984.
According to the Ministry, G. G. was involved in a series of robberies in Tbilisi, targeting shops, banks, and individuals. He was also accused of illegally purchasing, storing, and carrying firearms, which he used to threaten and harm his victims.
The Ministry said they conducted operational measures and investigations to track down and apprehend the suspect, who was considered armed and dangerous. They did not disclose the arrest details but said it took place in Tbilisi on Tuesday.
The suspect was brought before a court, where he was found guilty of robbery and illegal possession of firearms, which are punishable by up to 7 years of imprisonment under the Georgian Criminal Code. However, the court decided to impose the death penalty on G. G., citing the severity and frequency of his crimes, as well as the public interest and safety.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs said they are satisfied with the court’s verdict and will continue to work to prevent and combat crime in the country. They also urged the citizens to report suspicious activities or persons to the police.
The death penalty is a controversial issue in Georgia, where it has been abolished for ordinary crimes since 1997 but remains in force for crimes committed in wartime. The last execution in Georgia took place in 1995, and since then, no one has been executed, although some death sentences have been issued.
The Georgian government has expressed its intention to join the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which aims to abolish the death penalty but has not yet ratified it.
