 Culture and Sports Ministry congratulates Georgian  Chess Queen “Nona Gaprindashvili” on her birthday

Nona Gaprindashvili is often called the chess queen of Georgia . She has been  been congratulated by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the On her birthday. A five-time world champion  won the  chess olympiad for a record eleven times.

Tbilisi: Nona Gaprindashvili is often called the chess queen of Georgia . She has been  been congratulated by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the On her birthday. A five-time world champion  won the  chess olympiad for a record eleven times.

Gaprindashviliis the first female chess player who was awarded the title of Grandmaster in the category of women   chess.  Moreover, she is also an international grandmaster among women.  It is also worth mentioning that she won the Female Chess Oscar award in the year of 1982.

She played a significant role in promoting chess among the women players of the country. Her contribution to the sports culture of independent Georgia is also noteworthy and holds the post of the first president of the Olympic Committee of independent Georgia.  She further remains the president of the FIDE as well as the Georgian Chess Federation.

Due to the extraordinary contribution he made to chess and other sports in Georgia and other parts of the region she has been awarded three prominent awards, The first award is the  Order of the International Olympic Committee and the others are the Order of the World Association of National Olympic Committees and the Order of the European Olympic Committee as well.

It is also worth mentioning that Nona Gafrindashvili is a laureate of “Europe’s Golden Pike” and also a winner of the Order of Honor. The other greater achievements in her basket are Vakhtang Gorgasli I and II degrees medals and a member of the World Chess Hall of Fame.  She has been rewarded with the   honorary citizenship of Tbilisi, Batumi, and Zugdidi. In 2001, Tbilisi Chess Palace was named after her.

The representative of the culture and sports ministry further said that more efforts will be taken in the future as well to promote the sports culture of country. They also expressed hopes the performance of the Georgia in international sports events will be improved significantly.
