Tbilisi: Georgia’s Ministery of Education, science and Youth honours the winner of the chess Olympiad. They won the chess Olympiad held in memory of the Nona Gafrindashvil. The cup winners were honoured by the Ministry at the Tbilisi Classical Gymnasium.
It is worth noting that this year students of the 175th public school of Tbilisi won the “Nona Gafrindashvili Cup.” The second public school of Zugdidi claimed the second prize and the students of the first public school of Sachkheri placed third.
The Minister of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia Aleksandre Tsuladze the five-time world champion in chess Nona Gaprindashvili, the first vice president of the Georgian National Chess Federation Gia Giorgadze and the director of the National Center for Professional Development of Teachers Berika Shukakidze took part in the awarding ceremony.
They congratulated the finalists on their success and presented the prizes to the winners. While extending the congratulatory message, Aleksandre Tsuladze stated, “I am glad that for the first time in the history of Georgia, the school chess Olympiad named after Nona Gafrindashvili was held. I am sure that this day will be unforgettable for all participants.”
He also appreciated the winner and said, “Chess improves intellectual skills in students and promotes the development of thinking, logic and concentration. That is why with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia, chess teaching was introduced in schools and we will continue to promote the development of school chess in the future.”
It is especially proud that the school chess Olympiad is named after the best female athlete of the 20th century, our national pride, chess legend and five-time world champion, added Nona Gaprindashvili.
Notably Mrs. Nona is the first woman in the world to receive the title of grandmaster. Moreover, with her unique talent, boundless and unprecedented achievements, she created the Georgian era of chess.
In this competitor 615 schools/teams, 2453 students and 1228 teachers and assistants participated in the first stage of the school chess Olympiad held in different regions. Later the winners of the regional tournament took part in the final.
