FAO Supports Animal Genetic Bank Project in Georgia

With support from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of Georgia, the construction activities and the establishment of an animal genetic bank are currently in full swing.
A Portuguese expert and animal genetic resource management specialist, Pedro Vieira was present on a working visit to Georgia. He inspected the ongoing construction works.
The visit aimed to assess the current state of animal genetic resources in Georgia, familiarize the databases, and support the process of establishing a genetic bank system at the national level.
After the inspection works, a meeting was held at the Scientific Research Center of Georgia and was attended by the heads of the Center, specialists of the Department of Animal and Food Production Research, as well as representatives of the relevant departments of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture.
The Portuguese expert got to know the register bases, and data platforms created by the Center and got information about ongoing and planned studies. The invited expert and FAO Georgia team presented detailed information on animals, birds, agricultural useful insects, and other local breeds in Georgia.
Within the framework of the ongoing activities, the working group was in the municipality of Dmanisi, in the village of Gantiadi, in the trial and selection station of the Agricultural Scientific and Research Center, and in the village of Gomareti, in the farm under the center.
At the end of the visit, the expert presented a report to the Scientific Research Center. According to his assessment, Georgia has a powerful resource that can contribute to the effective protection and use of genetic heritage. He also emphasized the importance of further partnerships and technical support.
The Scientific and Research Center of Agriculture (SRCA), in cooperation with FAO and international experts, continues to work intensively to strengthen sustainable management and conservation of genetic animal resources at the national level. It will help to lay the foundation for the implementation of construction activities in the country.
