Gotcha Javakhishvili the former ambassador of Georgia to France and Monaco has demanded that the foreign agent law must be withdrawn in the interest of the country. He said that this law will stifle the independent voices that are necessary for the EU integration of Georgia shortly.
He expressed these views during an interview with different media houses. He further said that his decision to reign was for honor not for any political interest. He said that I couldn’t rule out the possibility if the other diplomats followed suit. He said that the reintroduction of the foreign agent law has made his work to carry forward the l egacy of the European Integration of Georgia difficult.
According to him, he has expressed his discontentment with this law for a long time. As the country is aspiring to get full-fledged membership of the European Union this law made his work impossible.
It is to be noted that the Ambassador said he has consulted with his other colleagues on the issue and most of them are pro-Europe views. However, he did not rule out the possibility of any of his colleagues following suit and resigned.
He termed the reintroduction move as the part of strategy of the Ruling Georgian Dream party to win the election. This law has caused great humiliation as our EU counterparts are criticizing us and Russians are complimenting us.
The ambassador however denied labeling the current government as the pro-Russian. Gocha Javakhishvili’s resignation got scathing attacks from Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Tea Tsulukiani, who both called Javakhishvili’s decision an “insult to the country.”
Notably, since the reintroduction of the foreign agent law large-scale protests are being held especially in the capital city of Tbilisi. The protestors are terming the law as the Russian Law and said that this will make the journey towards the European Union Integration more difficult.
The police have launched a crackdown on the protesters however this was highly criticized by local, regional, and international leaders.
