To celebrate World Bee Day, a festival was held at the Mukhuri Beekeeping Trial Base of Chkhorotsku Municipality on May 20, 2026, Wednesday. It was organized by the Science and Research Center of Agriculture (SRCA) of Georgia.

The goal of the event was to promote the beekeeping field, raise awareness about the importance of bees and other agriculturally beneficial insects, and support local entrepreneurs.

World Bee Day is celebrated every year on May 20. The date was set by a decision of the United Nations General Assembly, aiming to showcase the role of bees in food security, biodiversity, and ecosystem conservation. The main theme of the World Day of 2026 is “Together for bees, humans and planet – partnership for a sustainable future”.

The event was opened by Nodar Khatiashvili, Deputy Director of the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture. Mayor of Chkhorotsku Municipality Jumber Izoria, Chairman of the Chkhorotskhu Municipality City Council Jano Pertaia, Head of Samegrelo-Upper Svaneti Regional Administration Giorgi Kvaraya, and Executive Director of the Beekeepers Union of Georgia Aleko Papava addressed the attending community.

Walk-ins discussed the importance of beekeeping, protecting local bee populations, and the need to develop sustainable practices in the agricultural sector.

During the Georgia Beekeeping Festival, there was an exhibition, sale, and tasting of honey, beekeeping products, handicrafts, and local products presented by local entrepreneurs and farmers. Master classes, musical arrangement, and inspection of the base of Mukhuri beekeeping were held. Participants of the event had the opportunity to get acquainted with current beekeeping activities and modern challenges in the field.

During the event, a discussion on challenges and prospects of development in the field of beekeeping was also held, with the participation of specialists, beekeepers, and representatives of different agencies.

At the Mukhuri base, which has been functioning since 2017, in addition to the maintenance and spreading of endemic populations, the mixture of the Megrelian population is being cleaned of bees.

The event dedicated to World Bee Day was organized by the Scientific and Research Center of Agriculture (SRCA), with the support of the Rural Development Agency, Chkhorotskhu Municipality Hall, and the Association of Beekeepers of Georgia.
