Alex Reyes received the Commitment to Diversity Award from the Georgian Southern University of Education. She exemplifies ongoing engagement in diversity issues and offers innovative and unique perspectives to promote and build respect for diversity in the classroom.
Alex Reyes, Ph.D., is the program director for the M.Ed. in Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (TCLD). She is the program coordinator for the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement. She is an associate professor for the Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education. She has been with the College of Education since 2018.
Her accomplishments include chairing the Faculty Senate Inclusive Excellence Committee and the President’s Diversity Advisory Council (PDAC). She has also chaired the College of Education Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee.
As a result of her advocacy work, Reyes was asked to serve as faculty advisor to a new student group, Educators of Color, which formed with her help in the spring of 2021. Students sought her guidance because they knew she was committed to their issues of concern.
For the past two summers, Reyes has taught students from COE in Wexford, Ireland, helping expand their perspectives through a study abroad program.
Reyes’ current research is focused on supporting newcomers in schools and communities. Her work will support the region as Hyundai, a multinational automotive manufacturer, prepares to open a plant between the Statesboro and Savannah campuses of Georgia Southern University.
Reyes says, “This award is a particular honour because this is an area I’m passionate about. To be formally recognized for doing this work means a lot.
