Giorgi Amilakhvar, the Education Minister of Georgia, recently held a press conference. This conference was held to share information regarding the increase in teachers’ salaries and other things done by the Education Ministry in this direction.
Giorgi Amilakhvar criticised the false misinformation campaign that there will be no increase in the salaries of teachers. He said that the Government had already planned to increase the wages of teachers, and it will take place from July 1, 2024. Moreover, this will be an unprecedented increase in teachers’ pay in recent years, the Minister added.
The Minister also stated that according to the new salary policy, the salary of full-time teachers will increase by an average of 500 GEL and more, and this will be an increase of about 35% in the average salary index per year.
Giorgi Amilakhvari also said: “Government wanted to respond to a false and damaging misinformation campaign regarding the teachers’ salaries in recent times”.
He further said that with the strong support of Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili, we are doing our best to make the education sector more progressive. Minister stated, “I would like to say that the education sector is always a priority area of the Government, and we are committed to enhancing the salary of teachers on a regular basis.
We are actively hosting meetings with our teachers both in Tbilisi and in the other regions, discussing with them all important issues and listening to teachers’ problems on this or the other challenges.
It is worth mentioning that to appreciate and pay teachers in a decent way, a new pay policy is being implemented, and other support programs are being proposed by the ministry as well.
It is very sad to see the false propaganda being spread by the opposition parties; it will damage the image of the education sector of the country minister further added.
In spite of all these significant increases, we believe teachers deserve much higher salaries. The Education Ministry is working on a new salary formula to pay the teachers as per their qualifications and performance.
However, we want to confirm once again that the new pay concept covers an unprecedented increase in salary for teachers under full work conditions compared to current salaries.
A major part of the 2024 education budget will be dedicated to raising salaries for teachers in public schools. We also want a fundamental breakthrough in pay policy and offer teachers decent pay.
Education ministry always wanted to call all stakeholders to come together on one platform on this unprecedented and historic pay raise reform that has never been implemented before for teachers by any previous Government.
