The National Agency for the Environment continues the work of expanding the hydrometeorological observation network, installing modern information-telecommunication and forecasting systems in active mode.
It should be noted that throughout Georgia, 278 units of hydrometeorological stations have already been installed by the agency, and by the end of the year the number of hydrometeorological stations/greenhouses will reach 298, which is considered the optimal number according to the standards of the World Meteorological Organization.
“Of course, the development of these systems continues, and international specialists must be involved with Georgian specialists. Based on their recommendations, these systems are placed to make the expected forecasts and warnings issued by our National Meteorological Service,” – said Nino Tandilashvili, the First Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, on Imedi TV.
Hydrometeorological Stations provide continuous measurement of meteorological parameters, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, and forecasting, precipitation amount, wind speed and direction, water levels, and online transmission of data, which promotes the quality of weather and hydrological forecasts and early warning of expected natural hydrometeorological events, increasing the efficiency of fruit.
Also, the agency has installed a new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system, which is one of the most important components of modern early warning systems. It enables the operational collection, processing, analysis, and timely dissemination of relevant hydrometeorological data from various sources, which is important in terms of coordination between state agencies and informing the population.
It should be noted that the expansion of the hydrometeorological network and the implementation of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system in Georgia were carried out with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), funded by the Climate Green Fund project “Expansion of the multiple-threat early notification system and use of climate information in Georgia”.
In recent years, the agency has also significantly expanded its geological monitoring network and is actively installing modern equipment in water areas, as well as processing satellite images (InSAR technology). Modern monitoring systems are installed on 28 telecom bodies across the country; 22 of them are integrated on a single server platform.
