The First Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, George Khanishvili, and the head of the National Food Agency, Zurab Chekurashvili, were in West Georgia, where they got acquainted with the ongoing measures to combat the Asian pheasant.
An official meeting with the representatives of the local municipalities of Guria and Adjara was held at the House of Culture of Ureki, which was attended by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Adjara Irma Abkhazava and the Deputy State Commissioner in the Guria region Ketevan Moygurilishvili.
Giorgi Khanishvili heard information about the current situation in the regions and planned events. It was noted that, during this period, the main challenge was the risks related to bad weather, which may cause damage to agricultural crops, especially hazelnuts, from pheasants and other pests.
Giorgi Khanishvili emphasized the importance of the active involvement of farmers and the role of local self-governments in the process of informing the population.
“At the meeting, we discussed the issues of risks related to the hazelnut harvest due to climatic conditions. Each farmer should take into account as much as possible the fact that in order to obtain a quality and large quantity of crops, it is important to apply for medicines according to the established scheme. I want to call on the farmers to do their best in the remaining period, to use the dry weather and apply medicines, including against pheasants”, said Giorgi Khanishvili.
In Western Georgia, all resources are mobilized, and planned activities are carried out in order to monitor, control and inform the population of pheasants. The Coordinating Management Center for the Fight against Pheasants actively cooperates with representatives of local authorities. Meetings with beekeepers and fruit farmers are held on a regular basis.
