Tbilisi: With the support of the Global Environment Fund, a new project, “Reduction of sustainable organic pollutants in the manufacturing and processing sector by supporting the circular economy”, is being launched in Georgia.
The Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, Solomon Pavliashvili, attended the presentation of the Global Environment Fund (GEF) funded project “Reduction of sustainable organic pollutants in the industrial and processing sector by supporting the transition to the circular economy”.
The project will be implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Caucasus Regional Environmental Center (REC Caucasus) in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture.
“This project is particularly interesting and important because, on the one hand, it will reduce sustainable organic pollutants in the industrial sector based on the principles of circular economy, and on the other hand, it will help us to fulfil our obligations agreed with the EU Association Agreement.
The project will develop approaches to reducing the import, placement and storage of organic pollutants to maximize the life cycle. This is important as exposure to dangerous chemical pollutants has negative impacts on both human health and the environment.
The project is complex, it includes several directions, and I think it will bring very positive results for the country”, – said Solomon Pavliashvili.
The project “Reducing sustainable organic pollutants in the manufacturing and processing sector by supporting the transition to the circular economy” aims to strengthen policy and existing legislative framework for the prevention of sustainable organic pollutants in the industrial and processing sector.
The project will support the industrial/recycling sector to reduce sustainable organic pollutants through the implementation of best available technologies and environmental practices, as well as enhancing capacities and knowledge. Project monitoring and evaluation will be carried out.
“We believe that through this project, we will be able to help the industrial sector, to introduce eco-friendly technologies, which are important for human health and the environment,” said Lamia Benabas, project manager of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
With the implementation of the project, the capacities of state agencies, industrial and processing sectors involved in environmental protection will be strengthened, which will contribute to the gradual reduction of industrial sustainable organic pollutants.
