Tbilisi: The Ombudsman of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani visited the Kutaisi social housing, where he inspected the building and talked to the beneficiaries placed in the housing.
As the Georgian Ombudsman noted, over 80 families (including 150 children) live in unbearable conditions. Moreover, the building is amortized with the damaged roof. Ioseliani also noticed the water leakages in the building along with the unmanaged drainage system.
The population has been asking for housing for years, but they only receive promises, and their condition is getting worse every year. In addition, the majority of the residents expressed dissatisfaction with the removal of social assistance.
Meanwhile, the Georgian Ombudsman once again emphasized that the right to proper housing does not mean only having a roof, i.e. providing a shelter. The actual meaning of Right to adequate housing is the right to live in safe, peaceful and dignified conditions and to ensure full access to services for persons and children with disabilities.
The Georgian Ombudsman mentioned that the Social housing in Kutaisi does not meet the requirements for adequate housing at this stage.
A day before, on March 31, the Ombudsman of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani visited the N2 Penitentiary Institution in Kutaisi.Within the framework of this visit, Ioseliani indulged in face to face interactions with the prisoners, including all juvenile defendants and convicts that have been placed in the institution.
In Kutaisi N2 closed institution, the public Ombudsman inspected residential buildings, cells, common spaces, walking yards, de-escalation cells, common showers, medical center.
In conversation with the head of administration of the institution, the Ombudsman received detailed information about security and prison rehabilitation programs and ensured that these programs are implemented as well.
