Georgia: Parliamentary Committee summarizes Green Book of Climate Change Law

Tbilisi: The Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of Georgia held a public consultation summarizing the "Green Book" of the Climate Change Law of Georgia at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in Tbilisi.

Tbilisi: The Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of Georgia held a public consultation summarizing the “Green Book” of the Climate Change Law of Georgia at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in Tbilisi.

The “Green Book” of the Climate Change Law of Georgia was developed by the Environment Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament of Georgia with the support of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and the United Kingdom. The purpose of creating the “Green Book” is to initiate a broad public discussion and consultation for the development of the Climate Law of Georgia.

The “Green Book” of the Climate Law includes the international obligations undertaken by Georgia, the existing national policy, the analysis of the impact of climate change on Georgia, future risks and international examples of the climate law.

The first deputy of the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Nino Thandilashvili, Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University Jaba Samushia attended the summary public consultation meeting on the “Green Book” of the Climate Change Law

Tamar Aladashvili, director of the Environmental Information and Education Center, Lasha Nakashidze, head of the Westminster Democracy Foundation’s representation in Georgia, and Nino Chikvanaya, project officer of the Good Governance Foundation (GGF) were present.

Representatives of municipalities, non-governmental organizations and the educational sector, students and interested parties participated in the consultation. In order to promote maximum involvement in the public consultation, the meeting was held in a hybrid format.

After the opinions received within the framework of the consultations, the “White Book” of the Climate Change Law will be developed, in which the main principles of the Climate Law of Georgia will be reflected. Public consultations are carried out with the involvement of the Environmental Information and Education Center.
