Georgia Philippines signs MoU for maritime transport

The Georgia and Philippines have recently signed a memorandum of understanding for enhancing maritime transport cooperations. The director of the Georgian Maritime Transport Agency Alexi Akhvlediani and the Maritime Administrator of the Republic of the Philippines Ms. Sonia B. Malaluan signed a memorandum of understanding.

This is step forward taken by both countries to increase the cooperation in the field of maritime transport between the two countries in future. It is worth to note that the memorandum envisages sharing of best practices in the maritime sector, provision of technical assistance, exchange of information and implementation of joint projects for the development of the maritime sector.

It is also to be noted that this significant signing ceremony was held in London, within the framework of a working visit to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The signing ceremony was attended by Giorgi Saganelidze, Acting Ambassador of Georgia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

At the same time at the meeting, the parties discussed ongoing projects in the maritime sector between the two countries and discussed opportunities for further deepening cooperation.

It is noteworthy that the Philippines is among the 10 countries in the world as a major shipbuilding country, with great experience and history. According to UN Trade and Development data for 2023, a total of 2,207 ships sails under the maritime flag of the Republic of the Philippines, with a deadweight of 6 million. More than half of the fleet (3.5 million dwt) is owned by Filipino companies.

Both sides have agreed to take all other necessary steps also in future so that the cost of transportation can be reduced by switching to sea route transport as well.

The many countries across the globe have been making step to increase share of maritime transport for their raw material as well as the finished products to other countries. The maritime transport is being seen as cheaper and best alternative to the regular means of transportation.
