Irkali Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia announced yesterday that $88.25 million will be spent to develop Kutaisi Airport. He also expressed hopes for increased international air travellers to Georgia after the renovation of its international airports.
The $88.25 million investment will be used to upgrade the basic infrastructure at Kutaisi International Airport. According to the Prime Minister this investment will be a significant step for the development of the western parts of the country.
It is worth noting that the investment amount will be used to construct the 3.5 km-long runway and airport infrastructure. The announcement was made by the Prime Minister during a public event.
Prime Minister in symbolic construction opening installed a symbolic capsule of construction.. Aviation experts call this development project a milestone. They expressed hope that it will facilitate the country’s connectivity and transit capabilities with countries in the Caucasus region and other countries around the world.
According to official data, Georgian Dream’s investments have surpassed the total amount invested by all the opposition parties. An amount of ₾200 million ($73.54mln) has been invested in this country’s airport development project.
Prime Minister further revealed that this investment will not only change the Kutiaisi airport infrastructure but also benefit the whole western region of the country. In the future, more such initiatives will also be taken for other airports in the country.
It is to be added that in the next phase of the airport development project the terminal passenger will be expanded. This will accommodate the increasing number of international travellers. The terminal’s capital will be able to accommodate 1.7 million to five million air passengers. The PM said the new runway would have world-class facilities.
A few months ago the Prime Minister also stressed the role of tourism in the country’s economy. According to the Prime Minister due to the increased inflow of tourists the economy has witnessed huge growth. It should be added that recently GCAA also noted the increase in international air travel and called for the improvement of airport infrastructure to provide world-class facilities.
