The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, together with the delegation, took part in the special session of the North Atlantic Council held within the framework of the Madrid Summit, which was attended by the leaders of Finland, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and high-level representatives of the European Union, in addition to the member countries of the Alliance.

The challenges faced by the existing global security architecture and the security environment created in the Euro-Atlantic space were discussed at the meeting of the Council. The need to further deepen the cooperation of NATO members and partner countries in order to jointly promote the preservation of the international order based on the norms of law was emphasized.

Developments in Ukraine were also discussed at the session. The importance of helping Ukraine against the background of the current military aggression was emphasized.

The Georgian Premier spoke about the deterioration of the security environment in the Black Sea region and the steps taken by Georgia in the current situation. In his speech, the Prime Minister noted the unprecedented high-level practical cooperation between Georgia and NATO developed over the last years and expressed hope that the progress achieved by the country in terms of implementing reforms will have a positive impact on Georgia’s path to membership.

Several important documents were adopted at the Madrid Summit, including NATO’s New Strategic Concept – 2030, the Summit Communiqué and the “Georgia Assistance Measures Document”. It should be noted that all three documents contain all the issues critical for Georgia. In particular, the decision of the Bucharest Summit to make Georgia a member of NATO is confirmed, NATO’s open-door policy, Georgia’s status as an aspirant country is confirmed, and the Alliance’s unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is confirmed.

The issue of Georgia is reflected in detail in the new strategic concept of NATO, which will be a guiding document for the Alliance for the next ten years.

It is worth noting the “Georgia-tailored assistance measures document”, which was approved at the summit and contained specific measures for the further development of Georgia’s defence capabilities and the more effective involvement of NATO in this process.
