Georgia: Renovation of historical Metekhi Bridge will launch this month

Georgia: Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced on Wednesday that a complete renovation of Metekhi Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in the capital city of Georgia, Tbilisi, will be started this month.

Georgia: Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced on Wednesday that a complete renovation of Metekhi Bridge, one of the oldest bridges in the capital city of Georgia, Tbilisi, will be started this month.

Tbilisi Mayor also stated that the traffic in the region would be “somewhat restricted” due to the revamping project worth 2 million GEL, which is around ($​​649,380/€594,688) on the bridge built back in 1951 but with roots back in the medieval era.

According to the Mayor, the project will include new asphalt-concrete pavement, renovated walkways with natural stone tiles, and reinforcement of facades and arches.

Moreover, Kaladze also indicated that the bridge’s cast-iron railings would be renovated while maintaining their original look.

“After the completion of the project, the Metekhi Bridge will be a completely restored and remodelled structure,” Kaladze added. 

Other bridges in the capital city, according to the mayor, needed to be renovated.

The Metekhi Bridge is located near the Metekhi Church in Tbilisi’s Old Town, on the Mtkvari River. Historical notes on previous bridges in the area date back to the 8th century and are recorded as locations of major historical events, while the contemporary one was built during the Soviet era.

The country is working intensively for the development of the country in various sectors. Within the past few months, the country has signed several agreements with foreign governments to improve its infrastructure in Georgia.

The construction of the Kvesheti-Kobi road and tunnel section is also underway in Georgia. The section forms a part of the North-South corridor in the central areas of the nation.
