Georgia: Georgian People’s Ombudsman Levan Ioseliani, within the UN Women’s Organization project framework, held a consultative meeting on November 8, 2024, with representatives of non-governmental organizations working in Kakheti and women’s rights activists.

The meeting discussed the needs and challenges of civil rights organizations, gender equality and women’s empowerment in the region, and the prospects for deepening collaboration between the Office of the Public Defender and the civil sector.

The Ombudsman discussed gender equality, women’s empowerment, and women’s political participation. He stressed the challenges of childhood marriage/engagement, violence against women, and femicide in the country and the need to activate public politics in this direction.

Deputy Public Ombudsman Irine Chikhladze informed the participants of the meeting in detail about the mandate of the Public Ombudswoman, the work carried out by the Public Protector in the direction of gender equality, and the plans emphasized the importance of the involvement of the civil sector for the achievement of gender equality and noted that the Public Umbrella will continue its active coordination in this direction Both governmental and civic organizations.

Among the issues raised were the lack of programs for the protection and assistance of women in the Kakheti region, mechanisms to encourage inclusion in programs for the correction of violent behavior and women’s economic empowerment, the necessity of creating supportive programs, and the need for permanent training of law enforcement agencies on gender issues.

The event was organized by the UN Women’s Organization Georgia Office with the financial support of the Norwegian Government.
