Georgia: A Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) was signed between the Agricultural Scientific and Research Center (SRCA) of Georgia and the Australian company “Bents Road Winery Pty Ltd” on December 16, 2024, Monday.

The Georgian Scientific Research Center of Agriculture (SRCA) is a Public research organization under the of Umbrella Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia.

Bents Road Winery Company (BRW) which was founded in 2000, is located in Ballandean, one of the coldest regions of Australia. Due to the relatively cold climate, the organoleptic profile of European wine is being formed there. It is noteworthy that the company also works on Kvevri (Ovevri) wine and actively promotes Saperavi.

For information, it is to be noted that Saperavi is an acidic, teinturier-type grape variety native to the country of Georgia, where it is used to make many of the region’s most well-known wines. It is also grown in Russia and in lesser quantities in Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Australia.

Within the framework of the memorandum, the Research Centre will issue relevant recommendations on Georgian grape varieties, which will be suitable for the production of premium wines in the Granite Belt (Queensland).

Levan Ujmajuridze, Director of the Scientific and Research Center of Agriculture, introduced the members of the Australian delegation to the members of local and international scientific projects that are ongoing at the Center, which are related to research, identification, micro vinification, and related issues of Georgian grapes.

The Head of the Viticulture and Wine-making Division, David Chichua, presented wines made from rare Georgian grape varieties produced at the Jighaura base to the Australian guests. The guests also viewed the ampelographic collection at the Jighaura base and learned about the characteristics of vine pruning and formation, which will help them in the proper management of Georgian grape varieties grown in Australia.
