Georgia’s anti-LGBT Law finally comes into effect

The anti-LGBT law of Georgia which created controversy across the country has finally come into effect.

Tbilisi:  The anti-LGBT law of Georgia which created controversy across the country has finally come into effect. The law was implemented by Georgian Dream led government despite wide-scale protests staged by opposition parties in country.

In the month of September, Georgian Dream government adopted this law which have now come into effect from Monday throughout country. The anti-LGBT law was in centre stage during election campaign of Georgian Dream. The strict provisions under this law will impose many hard restrictions against person who falls under LGBT category.

Some of highlighted provisions includes ban over free of expression, ban on right of assembly by such persons. At the same time law also proposes to ban Gender changing medical procedure with immediate effects. The ban over same-sex marriage has again been enforced.

The legal experts are interpreting law as per their own understanding. Some expressed views that the clear victory to Georgian Dream party in October Parliament election gave a boost to Georgian Dream for execution of this law. Moreover, this may be tacit of Georgian Dream to divert public attention from ongoing protests against Government decision to delay its European Integration process.

The law while covering LGBTs stated, the objective of law is to stop people popularization of homosexual relationships irrespective of consent. The Georgian Dream have ignored all opposition against this law.

On the other hand, opponent parties and critics of Georgian Dream have expressed their serious concern against the law. According to them this will be used against the people who are not supporting action of ruling regime and opposing the illegal action of the Government as well.

It is worth to mention that the law has been opposed by many Western and European countries. The President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili also declined her consent to bill and kept it open for speaker of Parliament to take appropriate decision.

Notably this law was supported by the Georgian Orthodox Church Patriarchate; this is one of greater institution of Georgia which enjoy great respect among all section of country.
