Georgia: Giorgi Amilakhvari meets AMSE’s president

Giorgi Amilakhvari, the Georgian Minister of Education, Science, and Youth met with the President of the Association of European Medical Schools (AMSE) Professor Harm Peters.

Giorgi Amilakhvari, the Georgian Minister of Education, Science, and Youth met with the President of the Association of European Medical Schools (AMSE) Professor Harm Peters. 

At the same time he held a meeting with the President of the Association of Medical Education (AMEE) Professor Subha Raman and the President of the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) Professor Ricardo Lein-Borke.

At the meeting the Georgian minister introduced the projects and plans to the guests regarding medical education development in his country.

According to Giorgi Amilakhvar “promoting the internationalization of the education systemimproving the quality of medical education is one of the main priorities of the Ministry. Moreover, several important steps have been taken in this direction in recent years. This includes the National Center for the Development of the Quality of Education of CIS received the recognition of the World Federation of Medical Education in 2018, which confirms the standards of quality provision of higher education in Georgia”.

This recognition is also a reflection that Georgia’s medical programs are by the joint agreement of the World Health Organization and the World Federation for Medical Education added minister.

Minister also underlined that as per the requirements of WFME the field characteristic of medicine was developed and essentially updated which describes in detail the results of learning and competencies that should be met by all graduates of medical education programs. 

The discussion at the meeting touched the issues like the importance of the acquisition of membership of the European Association for Quality Assurance of Higher Education (ENQA) and registration of Quality Assurance Agencies (EQAR). In this regard it was noted that this will be a step forward for the Georgian education system.

In their turn the representatives of the world’s leading organizations in the field of medical education positively evaluated Georgia’s actions and projects for the development of medical education. At the end of the meeting guests expressed their readiness to strengthen cooperation with Georgia which was welcomed by the Minister.
