Georgia: In Washington, Irakli Lekvinadze, the Chairman of the Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency (GCCA) and Sergo Sanikidze Head of GCCA’s Consumer Rights Protection Department participated in a panel discussion at the international conference on consumer rights.
Washington, D.C. hosted an international conference organized by the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) and the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on September 27, 2024.
During his speech, Irakli Lekvinadze focused on the decisions taken in the field of consumer rights protection and the current challenges to international standards and guidelines already implemented in Georgia by E.U. legislation.
“In 2022, the Georgian Parliament adopted the law on “Consumer Rights Protection”. To date, our Agency has considered 1,500 application decisions that have restored rights to thousands of users and increased compliance, resulting in increased customer trust. GCCA conducts awareness meetings with consumers, traders, and various stakeholders. It is important to have international cooperation, experience sharing, digitizing services, and applying new technologies in our future business,” Irakli Lekvinadze noted.
Sergo Sanikidze spoke at the panel session with the Chairman of GCCA, the leading person in the consumer rights protection agencies of the United Kingdom, Poland, Armenia, Australia, and New Zealand.
At the panel discussion, he discussed practical cooperation in the consumer protection and enforcement process with representatives of Belgium, the Netherlands, Lithuania and the USA.
Within the framework of the working visit, meetings are planned with the first persons of international organizations and consumer rights protection agencies of different countries. More than 80 countries are participating in the conference.
Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency (GCCA)
According to the Georgian Law on Competition, the Georgian Competition and Consumer Agency (GCCA) was established on April 14, 2014. It represents an independent regulatory body entitled to enforce competition legislation in Georgia. The principal objective of the Agency is to protect fair and undistorted competition in the Georgian market.
