A two-day farming training camp was held in Jighaura City’s agriculture  base. The training was held under the project “Expansion of the Early Warning System of Multilateral Threats and the Use of Climate-related Information in Georgia, a UNDP project.”

In this meeting, the farmers and extension workers of the municipalities of the Shida Kartli and Kakheti regions received training on farming perennial crops.   The  “Expansion of the Early Warning System of Multilateral Threats and the Use of Climate-related Information in Georgia” is a UNDP (United Nations Development Program) program. This is a digital agro-platform through which farmers of these regions will receive information about the expected weather promptly and weather-related information.

The platform is operated by the Rural Development Agency in coordination with the Scientific Research Center of Agriculture and the National Environment Agency. During these two days  the training participants discussed the importance of prompt notification about the expected weather. At the same time the agriculture experts touched on some agrotechnical works that will be carried out in wine and fruit crops after the assessment of the changes in weather patterns.

The attendees were addressed by Zviad Bobokashvili  Head of Fruit Crops Research Service  and Tekla Zakalashvili  Head of Invitro Laboratory. They along with theoretical training, introduced the participants to the progressive methods of green operations and whole-farming with practical examples. The farmers  received information about ongoing research and scientific projects in the direction of fruit growing, viticulture(growing grapes for winemaking), and integrated plant protection at the demonstration bases.

The project “Expansion of the early warning system of multilateral threats and the use of climate-related information in Georgia” has been  developed with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Notbaly this  UNDP’s led project is being implemented with the support of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the governments of Georgia, Sweden, and Switzerland. The experts  advised the farmers to adopt climate-friendly agriculture practices  as  farmers have a great role to play in mitigating the negative effects of climate change and growing temperatures.
