Georgia: The Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, David Songulashvili met with representatives of administrations of protected landscapes of Georgia.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia shared glimpses of the meeting on its official Facebook page on January 24, 2025. The ministry also shared a small note about the meeting and the photographs.
According to the information shared by the Ministry, David Songulashvili heard information about ongoing and future infrastructural projects in protected landscapes, including the construction and rehabilitation of visitor centers, placement of tourist trails, information boards, and road markers; the discussion touched on the monitoring of smart devices and biodiversity, as well as “working yards,” sawmills, and pastures.
It should be noted that a protected landscape is a category of protected areas administered by a local municipality. Creating a protected landscape contributes to the protection and preservation of the region’s natural and cultural values, the development of local traditional activities, and the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.
During the meeting, David Songulashvili expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards the representatives of protected landscapes administrations for their work in the field of environmental protection and expressed his wish to learn about the results achieved on the spot. He also appreciated their presence at the meeting.
The meeting was attended by representatives of five protected landscapes. They are mentioned below:
- Aragvi (Dusheti municipality),
- Truso (Kazbegi municipality),
- Machakhela (Khelvachauri municipality),
- Tana and Tedzmi (Gori municipality),
- Tusheti (Akhmeti municipality).
The meeting held in the Ministry was also attended by the deputies of the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Nino Tandilashvili and Yuri Nozadze, representatives of the Agency of Protected Areas, relevant local municipalities, and relevant services within the Ministry.
It should be noted that as of 2024 the area of protected areas in Georgia is 927 729 hectares, which is about 13.3% of the country’s territory. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture is actively working towards the growth of protected areas.
