A memorandum was signed between Environment Ministry, NCDC Georgia and UNICEF

Georgia: In order to prevent the impact of lead on children and adults, the memorandum envisages joint research on the content of lead in spices.

The memorandum was signed by the First Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Giorgi Khanishvili, the Director General of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC), Amiran Gamkrelidze, and the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Georgia, Ghasan Khalil.

“The high level of lead in children’s bodies poses a serious threat to their health. The purpose of the memorandum is to implement a program that will ensure the study of the mentioned issues. At the same time, it will allow the National Food Agency to develop recommendations on what steps should be taken to ensure safe nutrition for children,” said Giorgi Khanishvili.

Ghasan Khalil, the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Georgia, noted that studying the impact of lead on health is an important issue.

Within the framework of the memorandum, the parties will try to eliminate the problem of lead poisoning in the country by carrying out relevant studies.

According to Amiran Gamkrelidze, Director General of the National Public Health Center (NCDC), with the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund, in the next few years, the issue related to the high content of lead in the country should be settled and the parameters should be brought closer to Western standards.
