Roseau, Dominica: The Prime Minister of the Caribbean island nation Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit announced that he will implement some educational changes in Dominica basically to improve the development of the students of the island nation. The announcement was made by the Prime Minister, during the press conference, held on May 26, 2025, Monday.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit stated that the present education system follows an outdated methodology and requires improvement. He noted that this is the main reason that poses risks to students’ development. He hopes that the educational changes will be implemented soon i.e., before the start of the next academic session in September 2025.
PM Skerrit also mentioned that a national symposium will be conducted in June to explain the emergency reforms. Furthermore, he added that the existing school curriculum of primary school that teaches the students a total of 13 subjects is the worst thing he had ever witnessed. He called it “ridiculous.”
In order to improve the existing school curriculum of the primary school level, he designed a new curriculum that is easier and more organized. Notably, it will include five subjects – English, Math, Social Studies, History, and Social Science.
PM Skerrit also noted that these subjects should be taught in addition to vocational life skills like agriculture, carpentry, art, and civics. These skills will enhance students’ development and will help them in the future.
According to PM Roosevelt Skerrit, it should be noted that they’re not fostering a culture of cooperation. They’re not building students with analytical skills critical thinking and comprehension. Except these, they are building students with various learning styles, abilities, and intelligences.
He mentioned that sports and music are among the extracurricular activities that should be a place where children work and play together. “Another school year should not involve children in depressing situations as losing this opportunity could lead to the loss of a generation,” added PM Roosevelt Skerrit.
He concluded his speech by stating that the new educational system will be perfect for this modern world as it will include technology and artificial intelligence.
