SRCA preserves Georgian grain seed in Svalbard Repository, Norway

Georgia: The Director of the Agricultural Scientific and Research Center (SRCA), Levan Ujmajuridze was on an official visit to Norway with the representatives of the Center on March 7, 2025, Friday.

The Agricultural Scientific and Research Center (SRCA) also shared the snippets of the director’s visit on its official Facebook page on arch 7, 2025. Along with the photographs, SRCA also shared some information regarding the director’s visit.

According to the information shared by SRCA, it should be noted that during the visit, Georgian scientists placed unique samples of Georgian grain crops in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Notably, the Svalbard seed storage, located in Norway, Arctic territory, is one of the most important genetic banks in the world. Its primary purpose is to protect and ensure the recovery of the genetic resources of agricultural crops in the face of global challenges.

It is worth noting that 210 unique samples of Georgian grain crops-wheat, maize, and bean seeds, which have been determined the agrarian culture and food security of our country for centuries, are collected and identified in 8 regions of Georgia. They will remain in perfect condition for decades in storage, stored at -18°C.

During this official visit, an agreement was also signed between the Georgian Agricultural Scientific and Research Center and the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture on the placement of seeds in the Svolbard Global Seed Storage.

The members of the Georgian delegation participated in the international meetings where they discussed with scientists from different countries of the world about the protection of genetic resources of agricultural crops, unique features of Georgian grain crops and their importance in the global context of food security.

This event was dedicated to the 17th anniversary of the Global Svalbard Grain Storage and was held as part of the project “Preserving traditional varieties adapted to climate change in-situ/on farm and ex-situ conservation forms” supported by the International Contract Benefit Sharing Fund (BSF).
