The United States of America condemned the violation of election rules, especially international norms in the election for parliament, which was conducted on October 26, 2024 in republic of Georgia.
The US secretary of state, Antony Blinken issued a statement in this regard. He also called for an independent investigation to reveal the actual reasons behind the poll rules violations.
In his statement, Blinkon added “It was very sad to see that all international norms were violated to influence the public opinion. He said the US supports the call for the appointment of International and local investigators to conduct fair and impartial investigations about the poll violation as well.”
While speaking further, he added ” In 2004, the democratic development in Georgia was a source of strength for the people of the country. The huge turnout of voters on October 26 also reflected this trend, that Georgian people have accepted the concept of democracy wholeheartedly.”
According to the statement, many local and international observers expressed concern before the election that the Georgian Dream could misuse power. They also feared that the ruling party, Georgian Dream, could misuse government institutions to threaten voters and affect public opinion in their favour.
As per the statement, all these apprehensions finally became reality. On the day of the election, large-scale polling violations were also recorded throughout the country. Blinken further stated, We have confirmed reports that there were many irregularities and violence to manipulate results. We strongly condemn this trend which is a serious threat to the democracy of Georgia.
The Statement of the secretary of state also mentioned that we would like to encourage all Georgian leaders who are working for the upliftment of democratic values in the country. It is also necessary to repeal all those laws that endanger Georgia’s democracy.
The Georgian government must respect all rules, regulations and laws necessary for Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The government also needs to protect the rights of members of civil society who work for the welfare of citizens.
