Joint Conference Discuss Judicial System Reform

Tbilisi: Recently, a joint conference was held by the Georgian National Platform of the Georgian Parliament and the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum.

Speaking on occasion, Anri Okhanashvili expressed his gratitude and thanked the attendees of the conference; he also thanked the participants for their contribution to getting a positive recommendation on the candidate’s status. Notably, the European Commission has recently recommended granting the candidate status to the Republic of Georgia. This candidate status is being seen as the first step towards the full-fledged membership of the European Union.

Chairman of the legal affairs committee, Anri Okhanashvili, said that one of the major recommendations of the European Commission was to create a platform for Dialogue and space for discussion. He added that this joint conference is a response to the recommendation of the European Commission.

Chairman also said that this will fulfil one of the nine priority areas under the recommendation of the European Commission, and today, we have the opportunity to share our views with the representatives of the civil society and political groups.

The legal Affairs committee chairman also said that we had created many working groups, including the group on judicial reform. This group on the judicial reforms have the objective of bringing the legal system of georgia into line with the best European and international standard , to advance the process of integration with the European Union.
It is worth mentioning that these civil platforms gave an opportunity to the representatives of civil society.

The Chairman of the committee, during the joint conference, further said that In the coming time, more judicial reform will be introduced to make the Georgian judicial System compatible with the standard of the European Union’s Judicial system.
Notably, a significant judicial reform was brought in the year 2017-18, and required amendments in the constitution were also implemented.

Along with other reforms, the Supreme Court of Justice was also created in a very planned way. moreover, this model was sent to the Vvenice Commission for the final conclusion on the fate of the supremer Court of Justice.
As per the recommendation of the Venice Commission, the model of the Supreme Court of Justice was fully adjustable under the provisions of international law.
