Guria: Information meeting held with residents

The Environment Information and Education Centre held a meeting with the local residents to discuss the news related to the country's forest sector.

The Environment Information and Education Centre of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia held a meeting with the local residents. This was held to discuss the news related to the country’s forest sector.

On the occasion of the meeting with the residents the official representative of the ministry also discussed with them the news in the forest sector the possibilities of utilising forest resources and many other issues.

It is to be specifically mentioned that the Deputy Director of the Center opened the Information meetings for Environmental Information and Education Ekaterine Bendeliani and the First Deputy State Commissioner in Guria region Ketevan Moistsrafeshvili.

At this meeting the Participants also learned about changes in the Georgian Forest Code, the region’s forest management plans and the possibilities of using sustainable forest management principles. They also received information about energy efficiency, alternative fuels, and improving state control of forests.

There was also a meeting in Georgia about the forest sector reform support project called “ECO Georgia”.The project aims to reduce pressure on forests and deforestation in Georgia through sustainable forest management and conservation.

On the contrary the project aims to promote the development of the market for energy-efficient and alternative fuels and strengthen the capabilities of communities and local self-governments near the forest areas of the country as well. This will also aim to increase public involvement in ongoing processes in the sector and their revenue sources for the world’s diverse sector.

This important project also includes 8 municipalities of three regions of Georgia . The municipalities inlcudes the Guria, Mtskheta-Mtianeti and Kakheti along with Lanchkhuti, Ozurgeti, Chokhatauri, Akhmeta, Telavi, Dedoplistskaro, Kvareli, Tianeti. The PROJECT ‘ ECO Georgia” has been co-financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) along with the Government of Georgia, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

At the same time the project is being implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, and agencies under the ministry.

Deforestation is also the biggest threat to environmental protection. Many initiatives have been launched to protect the country’s forests by the Ministry of environment protection and Agriculture as well.
