The Republic of Georgia and Turkey recently signed a memorandum of cooperation to collaborate in the energy sectors. The development occurred during Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s visit to Turkey, where he held multiple meetings with leaders, including Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The document was signed during the official visit of the Georgian Prime Minister to Turkey. It revealed that the Republic of Turkey will contribute to strengthening and deepening the existing partnership between Georgia and Turkey in multiple sectors to enhance mutual cooperation.

It should be added that the memorandum of cooperation between both countries will allow them to share knowledge and experience in areas such as renewable energies, energy efficiency, digitization of infrastructure, and reduction of carbon emissions.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by the first Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili, and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey-Alparslan Bayraktar. The signing ceremony was attended by Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze and President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as well.

Both countries share old, strong bilateral relations. It is also worth noting that Turkey recognized Georgia’s independence in 1991. The very next year, both countries established bilateral relations. Turkey has been Georgia’s biggest trade partner since 2007.  At the same time, as per the protocol signed between both countries, the citizens of both countries can travel to another country with just national identity documents.

The Turkish embassy is in Batumi, whereas the Georgian embassy was established in Istanbul. The Prime Minister also shared information on his social media handle, his Facebook page, where the social media users appreciated the memorandum of cooperation. A Facebook user, Zulfugar Mikayilov, commented, “Good luck to both  leaders.” Another user, one other Facebook user, while commenting, wrote, “May god bring success to our country by these signatures.”
