As Parliament has approved the name of Giorgi Gabitashvili, he will soon assume office as new Prosecutor General of Georgia. The previous Prosecutor General Irakli Shotadze resigned from the post citing health complications in late May this year.
The process of approving the name includes voting, during which 80 votes were casted in favor of Giorgi Gabitashvili, whereas Nobody voted against him. He will serve the office for next six-year term.
Giorgi Gabitashvili appeared before the Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia before the starting of voting. The New Prosecutor General shared his visionary view here. He also explained what measures could be adopted to develop the agency and answered the deputies’ questions about his work.
Notably Giorgi Gabitashvili has worked in the prosecutor’s office for almost eighteen years and held the position of Deputy Prosecutor General for eleven years. The name Giorgi Gabitashvili was proposed by the representatives of the academic circles of the Prosecutor’s Council.
The prosecutor council includes prosecutors and non-governmental organizations. Moreover 463 prosecutors and investigators of the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia also actively extended their support for the name of Giorgi Gabitashvili to one of the highest judicial posts in the country.
It is to be noted that Giorgi Gabitashvili’s name was selected as a result of the voting which took place on July 11 in the Prosecutor’s Council office. Eleven members of the Council supported Giorgi Gabitashvili.
The last Prosecutor General who cited poor health as the reason for his resignation left the office on May 23. He also stated “His doctor advised him to stay away from active jobs so I have left with no other option except to resign.”
Although the Georgian constitution provides a six year term for Prosecutor General , he can also be terminated before the expiry of tenure in some exceptional cases. Moreover in exceptional termination of services cases Prosecution counsel begins the one-month consultation process to appoint the new prosecutor General.
