Georgia: The National Gallery of Georgia, named after Dimitri Shevardnadze, will host a large-scale retrospective exhibition of surrealist artist Nino Lortkipanidze, covering almost all stages of his work. This will be the first time that a retrospective exhibition of this scale will be held in Georgia.

Nino Lortkipanidze graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of Tbilisi Academy of Arts. His teachers were architects – Archil Kurdiani, Ivane Chkhenkeli, and Tony Kalandarishvili; painters – Sergo Kobuladze, Ucha Japaridze, and Vasil Shukhaev. He continued his studies at the Prague Technical University (1969) and then at the Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a student of the Finnish surrealist painter Johann Linovaara. 1972-1976 – Worked in Moscow Project Institute Gyprotheater.

He taught and taught academic painting at Stroganov University of Arts and Industry (Moscow) from 1980 to 1990.

In Nino Lortkipanidze’s work, the architect’s spatial thinking is felt. His paintings are characterized by new perceptions of space, breaches of geometric laws, unusual angles, and mirrored flatnesses. Landscapes, still life, and compositions prevail in his works, in which the author moves away from the concept of material form and conveys the feelings and irrational mood of the inner world.

The artist had several personal or group exhibitions in different countries: Georgia, Finland, Belgium, Poland, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, and Turkey. His works are protected by Georgia (incl. Amiranashvili State Museum of Art, Palace of Art – Museum of Cultural History) and in galleries and museums of different countries in private collections.

It is worth noting that in the framework of the Ministry of Culture competition “Promotion of free projects in the cultural sector” in 2023, a catalog of Nino Lortkipanidze’s works was published.

The exhibition will open on August 15, 18:00, and run until August 30, 2024.

Address: Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery, Rustaveli Avenue #11.
