Georgia: The World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared Georgia malaria-free. This title was given after it was confirmed that the malaria transmission chain has been discontinued throughout the country, for at least the last 3 years.

The director of the European Regional Bureau of Health, Hans Kluge congratulated Georgia by saying, “This achievement must be thanked for the sustainable investment, the dedicated and targeted efforts of health workers towards prevention, early detection and effective management of all cases of malaria.”

The Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons, Labor, Health and Social Welfare of Georgia on Tuesday announced this through its official Facebook page. The Ministry also shared a video of the Georgian Health Minister giving his statement about this decision.

In the video posted by the Health Ministry, Mikheil Sarjveladze noted, that the declaration of a malaria-free country is another recognition of the sustainability of the Georgian healthcare system. According to his own statement, this success means that Georgia will have the ability to handle important and serious challenges.

He also noted that Georgia’s healthcare system has had many successes, and this is one of the notable moments among them. Of course, this means that it will subsequently open up new perspectives, and new horizons. Georgia will certainly continue to fight and overcome these challenges. I believe that future successes are very close.”

The head of the Georgian delegation of the World Health Organization, Silviu Domente responded to the declaration of Georgia as a malaria-free country. According to him, it was a huge investment and a lot of effort in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of malaria.

Georgia applied in August 2024 to receive free recognition from local malaria and certification from the World Health Organization. The country’s success in eliminating malaria follows a comprehensive strategy that includes prevention programs, the enhancement of healthcare infrastructure, and effective management of malaria cases.

Now in January 2025, Georgia received this recognition and this is one of the biggest achievements and a proud feeling for the whole country and its citizens.
