Tbilisi: In 2025, Georgia became the head of the International Energy Union. A ceremonial reception was held in the Austrian capital Vienna in this regard recently as well.
The ceremony was attended by the Director of the Energy Union, Artur Lorkovsky, representatives of the organization’s secretariat and diplomatic missions of member states.
The event was opened by the speech of the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Genadi Arveladze. Many other key experts also addressed the attendee on this occasion as well.
“Georgia begins the chairmanship of the Energy Union. This is not only a responsibility, but also an opportunity to encourage regional cooperation, strengthen energy security and advance the process of transition to green energy,” said the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development.
In his speech, Genadi Arveladze emphasized the areas that will be given special attention during Georgia’s chairmanship. These include energy efficiency, legislative approximation to EU energy regulations and energy security.
As Genadi Arveladze noted, energy is not just a sector it is the basis for economic stability, investments, and regional cooperation.
“Our commitment to modernizing the energy sector, bringing it into line with European standards and promoting regional cooperation remains unwavering. In 2024, we took a significant step towards the target model of the country’s electricity market – we launched day-ahead and intraday markets which creates the basis for a painless transition to a competitive electricity market,” the Deputy Minister noted.
The Energy Community is an international organization that ensures cooperation between the European Union and its member states in achieving energy security, energy sustainability and environmental goals. Georgia, which joined the organization in 2017, assumed its chairmanship for the first time. It is noteworthy that this year the organization celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The other high official from different countries of Europe also congratulated the Georgia for this new beginning. They expressed hopes that union will achieve new heights under the new regime as well.
