Sagarejo Municipality, Georgia: Avtandil Gulikashvili, Mayor of Sagarejo Municipality, celebrated the International Water Resources Protection Day on 22 March, 2025, by taking part in a greening event.

This particular event was held by the Education, Culture and Youth Affairs Department of the Sagarejo Municipality City Hall, which on its part, bought several hundred evergreen plant seedlings to give them out.

It is also worth mentioning that these seedlings will be implanted in certain places and a greening campaign will be carried out. With the assistance of the Mayor of the Municipality, Avtandil Gulikashvili and other local self-government members together with schoolchildren, will plant the seedlings in schools, gardens, and recreational zones.

In addition, within the framework of the campaign for the protection of the environment, similar actions are undertaken every year over the whole Sagarejo Municipality.

One of such initiatives was taken recently by Mayor Gulikashvili as he met the administrative unit of Mariamjvri State Reserve on the occasion of the International Day of Forests where he discussed the importance of forests in protecting the land during climate change.

The Sagarejo Municipality City Hall also shared glimpses of the celebration on their official Facebook account on 22 March, 2025.

International Water Resources Protection Day

The UN Assembly, since 1993, has declared 22 March as the International Water Resources Protection Day, a day established to remind everyone the importance of preserving and protecting water resources. This day is also celebrated as World Water Day.

The theme of World Water Day this year is ‘Glacier Preservation’, highlighting the role of glaciers in maintaining global freshwater supplies and the urgent need for conservation measures in the face of climate change.

The glaciers can be preserved by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, implementation of sustainable tourism and land use, and by reducing black carbon emissions. These initiatives will help slow down glacier melting.
