The Head of the National Environment Agency, Elene Ghubianur, together with representatives from the European Union, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the World Health Organization (WHO), attended the opening of a new atmospheric air quality monitoring station in the city of Gori.

The LEPL National Environmental Agency of Georgia shared the glimpses of the opening ceremony on its Official Facebook Page on October 10, 2026, Saturday. The Agency also shared a small note about the event along with the highlights.

Air quality monitoring is supported by an EU-funded program implemented by UN agencies in cooperation with the Austrian Environment Agency.

“With the support of the Government of Georgia, the European Union, and the United Nations Development Programme, we have opened another automatic atmospheric air quality monitoring station in the city of Gori. It is important that strengthening air quality management—and planning appropriate measures to improve air quality based on monitoring results—remains a priority for the country,” stated Elene Ghubianur, Head of the National Environment Agency.

In recent years, the Georgian government has taken a number of important steps regarding atmospheric air quality management, involving both legislative atections and practical measures.

Particular emphasis is placed on the support of the international community, which aims to strengthen the country’s capabilities in this area.

“The data obtained will facilitate more effective decision-making regarding disease prevention, cooperation with the industrial sector, and the review of regulations, ultimately improving air quality for all citizens of the country,” noted Douglas Webb, UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia.

It is worth noting that there are 23 atmospheric air quality monitoring stations in the country, which provide continuous monitoring of atmospheric air quality. Data from the stations are available online on the Atmospheric Air Quality Portal.
