The National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia has initiated an archaeological investigation of the significant megalithic rubble of Muashi. This site, located in the village of Sasashi, Lentekhi municipality, holds great historical and cultural importance.

The megalithic dump, which could have been a cult, is on a thrilling hill. The remaining foundation is about one meter high. At this stage, no written source will be obtained about it. It seems that the rubble was already destroyed during Ekvime Takaishvili’s expedition because Ekvime Tkaishvili, in his work “Archeological Expedition to Lechkhum and Svaneti” (1910, Paris, 1938), describes all the remaining temples and sanctities in the Sasashi community except the latter.

A group of archaeologists is exploring a megalithic rubble from the Middle Ages filled with soil and rock. Active archaeological works are underway at the site: cleaning of both the internal and external perimeters of the rubble has begun. On the south, east, and west sides of the garbage, the outer perimeter walls, which are 180 centimeters thick, were cleaned. Archaeologists have determined the damage to the north wall after preliminary inspection.

The archaeological works are being conducted by the company A(a)ip ‘Legion of Young Missimians’, a team of dedicated and experienced professionals in the field of archaeology. Under the leadership of Professor Zviad Kvitsiani, a renowned archaeologist, the team is committed to conducting thorough and meticulous research at the megalithic rubble of Musashi.

Svaneti, with its unique geographical location and rich cultural heritage, is a treasure trove for researchers. The region’s well-preserved historical and cultural monuments continue to captivate the attention of scholars, providing abundant material for scientific exploration.

The ongoing research of the unexplored monuments of Svaneti’s rich material and spiritual culture holds the promise of revealing important information about the region’s early middle ages, sparking new avenues of study and discovery.
