Kutaisi District Prosecution office held a meeting of a local council

On Saturday, 9 November 2023 the Representatives of the Kutaisi District Prosecutor’s Office held a meeting of the local council. This significant meeting was aimed at discussing the law and order situation and to reviews measures for enhancing the coordination between law enforcement agencies.

It is worth mentioning that the meeting was attended by a representative of the Kutaisi District Prosecutor’s Office along with the participation and involvement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Probation Bureau, NGOs, Local Self-Government and Legal Aid Bureau.

It is to be specifically mentioned that  During the meeting the crime situation in the region was discussed. At the same time initiatives for crime prevention were developed and a coordinated plan to fight crime was drawn up. Participants of the meeting also provided with latest information on actions and challenges the prosecutor’s office has taken to combat femicide, gender-based violence against women and domestic crime in Georgia.

During the meeting attention was drawn to the role of witness and victim coordination, who are actively involved in similar criminal cases and it was decided that it is Governmnet’s duty to support and empower victims and witness. The security of victims and witnesses is very essential for the early disposal of criminal cases.

The meeting also paid special attention to the main causes of gender-based murders of women, as well as discussion of gender stereotypes prevailing in the country, the investigation of similar cases by the Prosecution office, the problem of obtaining evidence in the process, and the importance of community involvement for crime prevention and justice delivery system also held . Issues were also discussed that  women face when they become a victim of violence.

The meeting saw a detailed discussion on Gender-based violence. As per recent data domestic violence is the biggest problem in Georgia. The more important thing that comes to light is that women make up the largest section of victims of Domestic Violence.

The Prosecutor’s office of Georgia is part of the sixteen-day campaign against gender violence. This sixteen-day campaign is an international campaign under which many seminars, meetings and conferences are organised across the globe for the prevention of gender-based violence.

At the same time many social and non-government organisations in Georgia are also part of this campaign. They are holding a series of events to raise awareness among the general public to stop gender-based violence against women.

The meeting was held as an interactive session . Attendee posed questions and discussed future joint actions that will serve to raise awareness among the public in collaboration with other government agencies and NGOs in the future.
