Defender office criticise excessive use of force against protesters

The office of public defender of Georgia has criticised excessive use of force against the peaceful protesters.

Tbilisi: The office of public defender of Georgia has criticised excessive use of force against the peaceful protesters. The law enforcement agencies have detained many journalists, protests due to their participation in anti-government protests.

The office has condemned the police action in past also. Moreover, office of public defender have also asked special investigation services of Georgia for investigating the police excessive use of force.

The public defender of Georgia Levan Ioseliani visited detained protester in many detentions centre at different locations. He after inspecting detention centre has underlined fair treatment to protesters.

Speaking specifically about condition of such prisoners in prison centre. He said that, “Unfortunately, as during previous protests, excessive force by the police has become a common occurrence. Moreover this was also said to see that 22 out of 25 detainees indicate physical violence is an alarming statistic collected by office.” 

He further stated that, in addition, it is noteworthy that people who committed specific alleged crimes should be held accountable. To date, many people have been injured in ongoing protests, but no law enforcement officer has been found guilty of abuse of power or violence.

However, we have asked the Special Investigation Service to investigation reports against police and other officer. Now it is duty of special investigation services to apprise pubic about actin taken so far.

Just a day ago public defender visited the Tbilisi temporary detention centre in capital of Georgia. Today again Public Defender and representatives of the Public Defender office visited 25 people administratively detained during a protest rally in Tbilisi at the temporary detention centres in Tbilisi and Dusheti and the Ingorokva University Clinic.

As per available information 22 of them indicated facts of mistreatment by law enforcement officers. The detainees also include a women journalist who was initially arrested on administrative ground but later criminal charges were imposed against him.

Notably protesters are opposing the decision of Georgian government to suspend accession talks to European Union till 2028.
