Tbilisi: As Georgia is making efforts to integrate into the European Union, on July 29, diplomats from EU Member States visited the Georgian Foreign Ministry. The visit aimed to discuss the progress on nine conditions that the Republic of Georgia needs to fulfill as a precondition for joining the European Union in the future.

In December last year Georgia was granted the status of a candidate country to the European Union. This status was seen as the first step towards Georgia’s full-fledged membership in the European Union. The visit of the Ambassadors and representatives of Embassies of EU member states followed the invitation by the foreign ministry. On the other hand  media reports revealed that all the Ambassadors were not present; rather  only a limited number of representatives visited the ministry office.

After the end of the visit  Asunción Sánchez Ruiz   Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Georgia answered journalists’ questions. She added that at today’s meeting  the information got was about the status of the progress the country has achieved in the case of nine parameters.  She also said that we had expressed our concern about the latest developments especially after the adoption of the foreign agents law. The protests were suppressed by violent means used by the law enforcement agencies against protestors.

When the media representative asked Asunción Sánchez Ruiz about further steps that can be expected from the block, she added that the European Union has blocked 30 million Euros from the European Peace Facility and  at the same time  downgraded high-level meetings. In addition  the group is also considering reviewing the unconditional backing of Georgia for its entry into the European Union. Ms. Sanchez Ruiz claimed that the forthcoming election of the Georgia parliament will be safe and peaceful. He also added that the European Union monitors the events in Georgia closely to make the election process smooth.

She expressed hopes that the election would be peaceful. Georgia’s parliamentary elections are scheduled  to be held in October 2024.
