PM Irakli kobakhidze’s decision on harsh penalities for illegal logging of trees

Georgia: The Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has announced his decision on severe punishment for illegal logging of trees in the country. It was discussed during a recent government session. Nino Tandilashvili, the First Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, praised the decision as a crucial step towards safeguarding Georgia’s invaluable forests.

Nino Tandilashvili, the First Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, also commented on the media about the initiative of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, which provides for amendments to the Criminal Code and based on which the punishment for illegal logging of trees will be tougher.

Illegal logging poses a grave threat to Georgia’s forests, leading to deforestation, habitat destruction, and loss of biodiversity. Tandilashvili stressed the need for important measures to control such illegal activities, particularly in cases involving large-scale exploitation of forest resources.

Tandilashvili highlighted the completion of a nationwide forest inventory, which provided valuable insights into the extent of deforestation and degradation. This comprehensive assessment has underscored the critical importance of proactive conservation efforts to safeguard the nation’s forested landscapes.

In addition to legislative reforms, Tandilashvili emphasized the importance of monitoring illegal logging. Strengthening regulatory oversight and enhancing coordination among relevant agencies will be essential to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations. By adopting a multi-faceted approach, Georgia aims to tackle the root causes of illegal logging and promote sustainable forest management practices.

The Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture is actively engaged in implementing strategies to tighten control over forest resources and mitigate the threats posed by illegal logging. Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders, including local communities and conservation organizations, the government seeks to foster a culture of environmental stewardship and responsibility.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s initiative to impose harsher penalties for illegal logging reflects the government’s commitment to protecting Georgia’s precious natural resources.
