As part of the celebration of the International Day of Ozone Layer Protection, a lecture seminar was held today by the Environmental Information and Education Centre. The theme of the lecture was “Ozone Layer and its Protection.” The students of the Green School attended the event.
Every year September 16 is celebrated as the International Day of Ozone Layer Protection. According to the Montreal Protocol the theme of the 2024 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is “Ozone for Life.” This theme focuses on restoring the ozone layer and tackling the challenges of climate change.
At the lecture seminar the Center for Environmental Information and Education trainer, Teona Shubladze addressed the attendees. He spoke in detail about the essence of the ozone layer thinning problem, the mechanisms for protecting the ozone layer as well as the necessary actions to protect the ozone layer in the world and in Georgia.
The meeting was interactive mode where students received comprehensive answers to their questions from experts as well. In 1994 the United Nations General Assembly declared September 16 as the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in connection with the signing of the Montreal Protocol.
This day is celebrated in 197 countries worldwide. September 16 reminds us that we are responsible for protecting the ozone layer for our health and the health of our planet.
In the year 1996 Georgia signed the Vienna Convention on the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The country has already taken steps to reduce the consumption of the most dangerous ozone-depleting substances especially chlorine-fluorine carbons and hydrogen-chlorine-fluorine carbons.
Notably the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture in close cooperation with partner agencies and financial assistance from the Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol and with the support of UNDP, UNEP, and UNIDO successfully fulfills its commitment and makes a significant contribution to the protection and restoration of the ozone layer.
