Georgia: Environmental Information and Education Center (EIEC)will be implementing the “Climate Change Disaster Risk Reduction in Georgia” project. This project will soon start in over 15 Georgian municipalities.
The project “Climate Change Disaster Risk Reduction in Georgia” is supported by the Government of Georgia. The Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Governments of Switzerland and Sweden are also assisting them in implementing the project. It is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Existing municipalities to start this project include Gori, Lagodekhi, Sighnaghi, Telavi, Akhmeta, Samtredia, Abasha, Senaki, Khobi, Kobuleti, Ozurgeti, Lanchkhuti, Chokhatauri, Shuakhevi, Khulo, Khelvachauri, Mestia, Chkhorotsku, Ambrolauri, Oni, Zestaponi, Sachkhere, Chiatura, Khoni, Martvili.
Also including municipalities implementing the “Climate Change Disaster Risk Reduction in Georgia” program are Kareli, Kaspi, Khashuri, Marneuli, Tetritskaro, Tsalka, Bolnisi, Dmanisi, Gardabani, Dusheti, Mtskheta, Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Gurjaani and Sagarejo.
Meeting Held to Discuss Project Proposals On Climate Change
Notably, the representatives of the new target municipalities will be invited to submit their project proposals. Moreover, an information meeting was held to discuss the project proposals.
The Environmental Information and Education Center shared the details and glimpses from the meeting on their official Facebook account. This post was shared with the locals on May 7, 2025 (Wednesday).
The meeting was opened by Solomon Pavliashvili, Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture. He was accompanied by Nino Antadze, Head of the Environment and Energy Division of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
During the course of the meeting delegates brought up the issue which local municipalities play in the project “Climate Change Disaster Risk Reduction in Georgia.”
Within the framework of this project, introduction of modern tools for climate change adaptation which include hydrometeorological observation and early warning systems, should be introduced.
Furthermore, participants spoke on issues of community based risk management and hazard maps. These maps were developed as part of the program. They also reported on actions to put in place which will help solve the issues discussed during the meeting.
