Georgia: Defense and Security Committee created official group to implement EU recommendation

Georgia: In order to assess the current situation in the field of combating organized crime, correct the shortcomings and develop proposals for further strengthening the fight against organized crime, an official group was created in the Defense and Security Committee.

According to the chairman of the committee, Irakli Beraya, who at the same time heads the said group, the members of the working group will work on the implementation of one of the 12 recommendations of the European Union.

The deadline for the group’s activities was determined to be no later than November 1.

According to Irakli Beraya, the working group will be staffed with representatives of government agencies and civil society along with members of the Parliament.

The group will prepare relevant proposals and legislative initiatives.

At the meeting, the deputy chairman of the committee, Teona Akubardia, was interested in the specifics of the working group’s activities, the issues of selection of non-governmental organizations participating in it, and decision-making procedures.



According to Irakli Beraya, at the very first meeting of the working group, all the directions of how the group will work and in what form the procedure of decision-making and reconciliation of positions will take place will be agreed.

According to him, the working group will assess the current situation in the field of fighting organized crime and identify challenges, after which specific initiatives will be prepared.

Committee members supported the creation of the working group.

At the meeting, the members of the committee discussed the draft law “On Amendments to the Law of Georgia on the Intelligence Service of Georgia” and the draft amendments arising from it in the third reading.

The speaker, the first deputy head of the Georgian Intelligence Service, Giorgi Liluashvili, spoke about the changes in the editorial nature of the project.

The package of draft laws discussed at the session will be sent to the plenary session of the Parliament.
